(This an excerpt from SOAR’s Activate course. To view the full course, click here.)

Welcome to the Activate course for the Strategy Deployment Institute!

Before we dive in, let’s review a few key items in a strategy deployment process:

  • First, the playbook process, which is required to set up your Lean Operating System.
  • And second, the key roles that are needed to ensure that your Lean Operating System functions well.

The sample strategy deployment playbook process required to set your Lean Operating System, requires a launch event and four sequential steps.

The duration of your playbook process is primarily dependent on two things:

One, senior leadership commitment and resolve.

As we discussed in the Organize course, sometimes executives underestimate how hard it can be to drive people out of their comfort zones while also grossly overestimating how successful they have already been in increasing the urgency for change.

And two: organizational size and complexity.

Obviously, the larger the organization, the longer the playbook process. For very small organizations, the playbook process may only require weeks or months to implement. For very large organizations, the playbook process normally may take a few years to complete the four deployment steps.

How do you make sure, then, that you’re getting the right things done?

As we discussed in both the Strategize and Organize courses, each organization has a solar system of activities representing how these different roles are aligned around the north star purpose, to accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives.

The Baldrige framework – from our friends at the Baldridge Foundation – starts in the strategy domain.

To create and deploy a good strategy requires a solid understanding of both the customer’s needs and wants, and the company’s internal capabilities.

Having established such an understanding is not enough, however: organizations also need a fully structured approach to achieving those objectives.

Learn the most efficient way to arrange the 4 M’s (manpower, methods, materials, and machines) to achieve an efficient, zero defect, high-value Strategy Execution System to best meet the needs of your customers.

How do you best organize for effective strategy deployment?

That’s the question we’ll be tackling in this, The Organized Course, from the Strategy Deployment Institute.

To get us started in this discussion of organizing for effective strategy deployment, it will be useful to think of strategy deployment as a tree. Each organization is responsible for developing their own strategy deployment tree.

=

Choosing Fundamental Values

For example, healthcare may choose business fundamentals like care coordination, quality and safety, patient experience, associate engagement, and stewardship and growth, while say, Toyota chose as their business fundamentals, safety, quality, delivery, and cost, or SQDC.

Other possible business fundamental expressions include innovation, the business fundamentals around R&D and new product development, productivity, supply chain, and people development, morale, and skill development.

The second level of your strategy deployment tree are the core branches or functional objectives. These are also referred to as the baby objectives. Critical items will probably require baby objectives. For example, profitability would likely need to address new product development, sales, marketing, and cost containment.

To develop good performance measures then, choose metrics that are both available and reliable. The rest can be developed as you align and adjust your strategy deployment tree over time. The process of strategy deployment tree development comes about from soul searching and often elongated question and answer sessions, just like when you developed your organizational mission or why statement of purpose.

Remember, you need to choose the strategy deployment tree process that best meets your needs. Only then will the whole tree thrive.

Strategize.

It’s a verb defined to devise a strategy or strategies to accomplish the organizational purpose.

=

A strategy is only as good as its deployment.

What good is a goal if you have no method to reach it?

What good is a plan if you have no way to execute on it?

=

Strategy Deployment is the art of implementing a strategy across an organization.

Does your organization have a good Strategy Deployment process?

Are all levels of your leaders and associates aligned toward the same goals?

To get started in this process,

we’ve built a simple tool to help assess your organization’s currently Strategy Deployment process. It’s built around some simple questions, yes or no. You’ll count up how many yeses you answered, and then we’ll help you score your organization’s Strategy Deployment.

But just a hint, if you’re answering even one yes we know you can benefit from a Strategy Deployment process.

Learning and deploying the Strategy Deployment discipline and processes have turned many organizations around from poor performance to great performance.

Take heart. Your organization too can win and soar. So again, welcome and we look forward to refining the Strategy Deployment process with you over the coming modules.

You and your colleagues have set out to accomplish an important strategy, right?

Now you need to make sure that strategy is accomplished, fulfilled, completed, implemented. Basically, you’ve got to execute.

This process of executing on your strategy is called strategy deployment.

How does strategy deployment work?

Strategy deployment focuses and aligns people and processes to effectively orchestrate the fulfillment of the organization strategy, thereby achieving customer-first, zero-defect performance, enabling the organization to rapidly respond to market threats and opportunities.

Now, strategy deployment, it turns out, is a well-established science.

In fact, strategy deployment is the top level of a broader efficiency science called lean

t

What is lean?

You may have heard of lean before, but just in case, lean is the process of maximizing customer value while minimizing waste, which means we want the best value for the customer while using the fewest resources.

Strategy Deployment Course

This video marks the beginning of our strategy deployment course, where we’ll start with a broader discussion about strategy itself, what it means to execute it well, and some symptoms of what this looks like, both in organizations deploying strategy effectively and in organizations that struggle with strategy deployment.

Watch the video above (or read this post) and then visit our blog to keep learning about strategy deployment and how this execution discipline can help you fulfill your strategy and soar.

SOAR Vision Group is one such partner.

Together the Baldrige Foundation and SOAR have created a LeaderDialogue website including a visual Baldrige Organizational Hierarchy of Needs diagram. An accompanying LeaderDialogue radio program effectively engages organizations of all types and sizes, delivering key Baldrige performance excellence principles and insights, thereby expanding the market reach and attraction of the Baldrige. The results to date are impressive, serving as a collaborative model for the future.
